W.E.R.Q.: Helen Mirren in Dolce & Gabbana
We haven't admitted this (for fear of being kidnapped and publicly flogged), but for the last 6 months or so, we've been decidedly underimpressed with Queen Helen's red carpet attire. The sassiness seemed to have been drained out of her and more and more, we noticed she was making somewhat standard age-related choices (e.g., MOB-style sheer sleeves and shawls to cover her arms), instead of being the Queen Helen we all fell in love with who doesn't give a toss about her age and will wear what she damn well wants to. Lots of neutrals and sheers and somewhat basic dresses so far this year. Oh sure, it's rare that she ever looks bad, but we missed the fun. Could it be that our Queen Helen had become ... perish the thought ... respectable in the last couple of years? Too depressing to consider, kittens. No, we hoped that she was just going through a period of uncertainty; as if she had recently discovered that she'd rather keep her arms covered and that led to a series of grandma gowns because, having conquered the idea of being sexy and fabulous at 60, she was now faced with the task of figuring out how to be so while approaching 70.
Helen? We think you figured it out. God bless you, you sassy old dame. THAT'S the Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica we all love.
